May 2009
Dear Friends,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I hope you will share in my upcoming trip to Sudan. Many of you know I planned to leave on April 13. But, on Easter eve, the night before my flight, the trip was postponed until May upon confirming the alarming reports from my co-workers on the ground in Africa with things going from bad to worse. The roads into Sudan and Congo being completely closed due to LRA terrorist activities near the existing radio station as well as the two new radio station locations. Over 20,000 people from this area are being displaced from their homes and are seeking safety in refugee camps with very little food, water or shelter. Without any ability to transport supplies in from Uganda I was forced to change my schedule. With the areas we are working in under siege, I am returning now with a deep burden.
When Rev. Paul Hurst and I left Sudan on December 24, 2008, the radio was again up and running in Ezo. We repaired the lightning damage, installed a new lightning protection system and trained eight additional Sudanese to operate the station in our absence. As we left, the LRA terrorists began moving into the area again. On Christmas Eve, a church I visited in the Congo just a few days earlier was suddenly attacked by the LRA. Those men, women and children in the church were holding a Christmas service and prayer vigil when the LRA lit the church on fire, killing all 105 people inside. These are just a small fraction of over 1200 people reported killed by the LRA since Christmas Eve to now. This cannot be another statistic; these are our brothers and sisters in Christ. These are the very people I have come to know and love, people you helped train by allowing EMI to go and equip them. You must know my heart is breaking. Without a Sovereign God and an eternal perspective it would be impossible for me to emotionally cope with such a tragedy.
The situation in Yambio appears to be improving some and I am at least able to fly in from Uganda, though at present Ezo remains closed to any road travel. Please pray as I head back bringing some financial assistance and what little aid we can to the suffering people. Even if EMI cannot accomplish everything we want to, I am passionately compelled to go and stand beside our friends and co-workers in their time of need to encourage them and let them know they are not forgotten. Even though we do not have the resources to help all of those displaced, we will with all our efforts try to provide for those serving with us. God willing, EMI will begin the work of building Radio Stations in at least one of two new areas. I am taking in some of the necessary equipment. Please help us to expand the broadcast of the Gospel in this most terrorized and ravished area. Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to transform lives. Only the Gospel can give lasting hope. The pastors and church leaders there are begging for our help. The physical needs are immeasurable with women and children suffering the most. They are grateful for anything we are able to accomplish. Primarily they are asking that we would continue to multiply their efforts by expanding the broadcast of THE GOOD NEWS over the airwaves.
“And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” Romans 10:14
Please stand with us in prayer. Please help financially if you are able. Your sacrificial giving makes it possible for us to achieve what in “human terms” is an impossible project in a devastated and dangerous place. You are expanding Christ’s Kingdom by allowing multitudes more to hear the Word of God unto salvation, many for the very first time. Thank you for helping share the Gospel to those who have yet to hear.
“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7
